Building Educators Capacity for AI Equity

Empowering Educators In the Age of AI

Building a collaborative community of Massachusetts educators to learn, share, and lead the ethical, equitable, and effective integration of AI in K–12 education. Together, we are building capacity, fostering innovation, and ensuring that all educators are at the forefront of shaping AI’s role in our schools.

Mission

We come together as a community of educators to collaborate, share resources, and reflect on how AI is shaping our schools and classrooms. Through these shared efforts, we build collective insight and strengthen our capacity to lead with equity and clarity in the age of AI.

Data-Driven Ethical Integration

Creating educator-driven data pathways that connect schools and stakeholders for ongoing reflection and analysis, ensuring AI integration is ethical and student-centered.

Why Educators Matter in AI Equity?

Pedagogical expertise: Educators possess deep understanding of learning principles, classroom contexts, and student needs, making their pedagogical knowledge central to successful AI integration (Seufert et al., 2021; AIPACK framework)

Collaborative implementation: Research shows teacher-led collaboration through professional learning communities and action research groups produces measurable gains in student achievement and more effective adoption of innovative practices (Kraft & Papay, 2014; Ronfeldt et al., 2015).

Sustainable and equitable: Teacher-led AI integration, grounded in real-time student feedback, creates approaches that are not only sustained and relevant but also inclusive and responsive to diverse learner needs.

NGLC's Perspective on AI in Education

AI is rapidly advancing, and experts predict it will fundamentally transform teaching and learning, from classroom practices to curriculum design and educator-student interactions (U.S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Technology, 2023; Holmes et al., 2019; Luckin et al., 2016). As Massachusetts educators, we approach AI with an inquiry mindset—not to simply advocate for or discourage its use, but to critically understand this technology, assess existing tools, and determine how they may or may not fit into our practice. Our aim is to engage proactively, harnessing potential benefits while remaining mindful of risks, ensuring teachers lead rather than passively adopt technology.

However, AI advancement often outpaces educational research, leaving schools without clear guidance (U.S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Technology, 2023; Holmes et al., 2019). NGLC helps bridge this gap by connecting educators with existing guidelines, best practices and research. In doing so, we ensure that any integration of AI is evidence-based, pedagogically sound, equitable, and led by educators who are at the center of shaping how AI tools are used in our schools.
